Why Dwight Howard Should Stay In Orlando

The NBA All Star game was held in Orlando this year and that brings more attention to the seemingly inevitable trade of Dwight Howard. However, I believe not being traded would be the best move for Dwight.

Ever since the NBA lockout ended there has been talk of Dwight Howard being traded.  Dwight seems to believe that the Magic cannot contend for a championship because of a lack of talent around him.  However, the argument can be made that the team is only one good player away from winning that championship.

The Magic are currently sitting at third place in the Eastern Conference and that is in spite of the uncertainty about their superstar.  So, why not eliminate all doubt about Dwight’s departure by him signing an extension.  This action would be profound in multiple ways for Dwight.

Firstly it would allow the team to play with a clear mind this season and give them a chance to contend for the title.

However, the more important impact would come in future seasons. By staying in Orlando, Dwight would make it a more desirable location for future free agents to sign. This would give Dwight the talent he needs to finally capture that elusive championship that he and the city want so desperately.

While many people may doubt the ability for Orlando, even with Dwight to attract free agents, I say "why couldn’t they?"  For example, the Miami Heat accomplished a similar feat by signing key free agents with the help of a star player, Dwayne Wade.  Another key attraction to signing free agents is the warm city climate, which both Orlando and Miami have, which increases the odds of signing players.

Another benefit to Dwight not being traded would be the ending of all the Shaquille O’Neal comparisons.  Both started their careers on the Magic and were dominant seven footers that brought their respective teams to the finals.  Another weird similarity is that they have both took on the same superman gimmick/nickname to enhance their character.

Shaq has been reluctant to pass the superman torch to Dwight, so why not completely abandon the comparisons by not being traded.  Shaquille demanded a trade from Orlando for very similar reasons to Dwight and got his wish by being traded to Los Angeles.  He went on to win multiple championships there and continued his dominance for many years.

Dwight should succeed where Shaq could not by staying in Orlando and winning a title for their great fans, organization and himself.  He would have taken a different path from Shaq allowing him to step out of the old superman’s shadow, cementing his legacy as a legendary big man.
